The Full Tummy Project

My friend, Kristy Chavers, and I are starting something called The Full Tummy Project in our elementary school(s)...the purpose is to send food home with kids on the weekend who are getting most of their food from school and may be at risk for hunger...what happens from Friday to Monday morning when they are home for several days?? We want to make sure they do not go hungry.

Here's how it will work:
1. You buy food and place needed items in a plastic grocery bag **see the list below**
2. Bring your donated items to me or Kristy
3. On Friday, as the kids get out of school for the weekend, teachers will silently place the food bag in the child's pack that is at risk for weekend hunger
4. REPEAT steps 1-4:)

Here are the item guidelines:
You may go ahead and make up the individual bags to be placed in the packs...include 2 breakfast, 2 lunch and 2 dinner choices, a drink and several snacks...

Breakfast: granola/cereal bars, individual cereal boxes, poptarts
Lunch/Dinner: peanut butter/cheese crackers, easy-open cans of soup, pasta, etc
Snacks: fruit cups, raisins, pretzels, gummy snacks, granola bars, trail mix, nuts
Drinks: 100% Juice juiceboxes or shelf-stable milk

*You may also buy boxes of these items to donate as well

Spread the word!!! We are hitting the ground running, so if you have questions or are interested in donating or volunteering, please contact us at: fulltummyproject@gmail.com

  1. Hi Jennifer,
My friend Emily Woodall posed this on fb today for me to see and this is wonderful!!! My 3 1/2 year old twins are in daycare at NACDC. Can this be done at daycares?
    Thanks,
    Kaycee

  2. Hi Kaycee...I am sure you can, you just need to check with whoever is over each individual daycare. If there is a need, I say go for it!!

  3. Are you taking stuff now? I could stop by the store before church tonight.

  4. The same day I read the post a teacher-friend told me of the need at my son's school. I have a few questions: How do you determine who is at-risk? Have you had anyone offended by being given the food? How do you get the word out, letters to all students? We are thinking of getting something organized. Thanks for your time!

  5. My church does this each Friday for schools in the community. We call it "Backpack Love", & our ministry is Straight Street Revolution. It is such a rewarding thing to be a part of. I am so proud of you, Jen!
